Well respected marketing news website Hotelmarketing.com is reporting that travel giant Expedia has lost as much as 25% of it’s organic search visibility in Google. Speculation is that this is due to a manual link penalty applied by Google for paid links in blog articles.
The SEO world has been talking for months about how Expedia has built thousands of keyword rich links on blogs and other article sites and used this approach to dominate the organic search results in Google for travel related phrases.
It does seem as if Google has investigated these claims and then applied a penalty to the Expedia website as a result. The interesting thing now will be how long this penalty is applied for, especially bearing in mind that Expedia spend millions of pounds a year on Google’s sponsored listing program.
